Description

South elevation (back entrance) of U & I Lounge. The interior of the lounge has caught fire, and smoke billows from the open doors and windows. A sign hanging on an adjacent building reads "Hank's Lawnmower Service." Below sign for U & I Lounge is a sign reading "Murray Rankin," with the symbol for General Electric below the name. Murray Rankin was a dealer of General Electric (GE) Appliances. A crowd is seen observing the fire, mostly men but with a few scattered women. Much of the crowd are wearing hats, several in the flannel baseball hat style popular in the 1950s. Although the photograph is undated, the U & I Lounge is first listed in the Traverse City city directory in 1948, so the fire was some time after that.
