. TRAVERSE CITY:
FRIDAY MORNING, A P R I L 27. 1860.
Almost a Duel.
While Mr. Lovejoy was making his speech against slavery in the House. Rogers A. Pryor, of Virginia, rose
and walked rapidly down one of the aisles, and confronting Lovejoy, and standing closc to him,'said that he would
not allow him to utter suc^ language. Mr. John F. potter of Wisconsin confronted Pryor, and said, in substance,
to him, "Lovejoy Anil speak! For eight weeks we
listened to Vour stuff, in silenbc, and now we intend to say
what wo please. Lovejoy shall speak P Shortly after
tblfl uecne Mr. Pryor aent Mr. Potter a challengo through
T.»T» Chisiam, to which Mr. Potterreplied, referring
him to Col Lauder to make the necessary arrangments.
Thflec torms, as proposed by Col Lander to Ti T. Chislam, were that Mr. Potter, though disclaiming allegiance
to the code, would fight Mr. Pryor in any place, in doors
or bat, in the District, with bowio kives. This was declined on the ground that thc weapons wore barbarous
and inhuman and not usual among gentlemen. To this
Col. Lander replied, that Mr. Potter detested thc whole
system of dueling as barbarous and inhuman, but being
railed to accouut for the exercise of free speech on the
tl9or of tho House, he consented, not being accustomed
to the usual weapons of thc duelist, to meet him in away
that would place him on equal terms, and to namo thc
time, place and weapon?. But as thc weapons named
by Mr, Potter wore objected to, Col. Loader, without Mr.
Potter's knowledge, tendered himself to Mr. Pryor without restriction, which was also declined on tho ground that
ho had no quarrel with the latter. And here the matter
ended.
