I n 1789, so g r e a t w a s t h e c i r c u l a t i o n of s p u r i o u s
p a p e r m o n e y , t h a t it a p p e a r e d a s if s o m e u n k n o w n p o w e r

n o t e s w e r e h a n d e d t o h i m , a n a t h e wishes of t h e mysterio u s M r . B r a n k w e r e Satisfactorily fulfilled. T h e s e s c e n e s
w e r e continually e n a c t e d . N o t e s t o a l a r g e a m o u n t w e r e
t h u s circulated; lottery tickcts were purchased; and Mr.
B r a n k — a l w a y s in a c o a c h , w i t h h i s face c o n c e a l e d — w a s
e v e r ready ou t h e s p o t t o receive t h e m . A t last t h e servant's suspicions were aroused; but, had he known t h a t
f r o m t h e p e r i o d h e left his m a s t e r t o p u r c h a s e t h e t i c k e t s ,
one female figure a c c o m p a n i e d all h i s m o v e m e n t s ; t h a t
w h e n h e e n t e r e d t h e offices; i t w a i t e d nt t h e door, p e e r e d
c a u t i o u s l y in nt t h e w i n d o w , h o v e r e d a r o u n d h i m like n
s h a d o w , w a t c h e d h i m c a r f u l l y . und n e v e r l e f t h i m u n t i l
o n c e m o r e h e w a s in t h e c o m p a n y o f h i s e i n y l o y e r — t h o s e
luspicious w o n t d h a v e been g r e a t l y i n c r e a s e d .
A t l a s t ' t h e B a n k o b t a i n e d a clue, a n d t h e s e r v a n t w a s
taken into custody. T h e directory imagined t h a t t h e y
h a d s e c u r e d t h e wholesale f o r g e r ; t h a t t h e flood of b a s e
notes which had inundated t h a t establishment would at
length b e dammed u p a t its s o u r c . Their hopes proved
fallacious, a n d it w a s f o u n d t h a t " Old P a t c h " (as t h e
m y s t e r i o u s f o r g e r was, f r o m t h e s e r v a n t ' s d e s c r i p t i o n , n i c k n a m e d ) h a d b e e n sufficiently c l e v e r t o baffle t h e B u n k D i r e c t o r s . T h e h o u s e in T i t c h f i e l d s r e e t w a s s e a r c h e d ; b n t
M r . B r a n k h a d deserted it, a n d not a t r a c e of a single i m p l e m e n t of f o r g e r y conld b e feund.
S o m e little k n o w l e d g e of " Old P a t c h ' s " p r o c e e d i n g s
was, h o w e v e r , o b t a i n e d . I t a p p e a r e d t h a t b e c a r r i e d on
His p a p e r c o i n i n g e n t i r e l y b y h i m s e l f ; h i s only c o n f i d e n t
b e i n g his mistress. H e was h i s o w n e n g r a v e r ; h i s o w n ink
m a k e r ; his own p a p e r m a k e r ; and. w i t h a p r i v a t e press,
h e w o r k e d h i s o w n n o t e s ; c o u n t e r f e i t i n g t h e s i g n a t u r e s of
t h e c a s h i e r s w i t h his o w n h a n d . B u t t h e s e d i c o v e r i e s
h a d no e f f e c t ; f o r O l d P a t c h h a d s e t u p a p r e s s e l s e w h e r e .
A l t h o u g h h i s s e c r e t remained a s i m p e n e t r a b l e , h i s n o t e s
b e c a m e as plentiful a s e v e r . F i v e y e a r s of u n b o u n d e d
p r o s p e r i t y o u g h t t o h a v e satisfied h i m ; b n t i t d i d n o t d o
so. H i s g e n i u s was of t h a t i n s a t i a b l e o r d e r w h i c h dem a n d s new e x c i t e m e n t s , a n d a c o a s t a n t s u c c e s s i o n of n e w
flights.
T h o following i s f r o m a n e w s p a p e r of 1 7 8 6 : —
" O n t h e 1 7 t h of D e c e m b e r , t e n p o u n d s w a s p a i d i n t o
t h e B a n k , f o r w h i c h t h e clerk, a s usual, g a v e a t i c k e t t o
receive a B a n k n o t e of e q u a l value. T h i s t i c k e t o u g h t t o
h a v e been c a r r i e d i m m e d i a t e l y t o t h e cashier, i n s t e a d of
w h i c h t h e b e a r e r t o o k i t home, a n d c u r i o u s l y a d d e d a n 0
t o t h e o r i g i n a l sum, a n d returning, p r e s e n t e d i t so a l t e r e d
t o t h e cashier, f o r w h i c h h e received a n o t e of a h u n d r e d
pounds. I n t h e e v e n i n g t h e c l e r k s f o u n d a deficiency in
t h e a c c o u n t s ; a n d on e x a m i u g t h e t i c k c t s for t h e d a y , n o t
only t h a t b u t t w o o t h e r s w e r e d i s c o v e r e d t o h a v e b e e n
o b t a i n e d in t h e same m a n n e r . I n t h e o n e , t h e figure 1
w a s a l t e r e d t o 4, a n d in a n o t h e r t o 5, b y w h i c h t h e a r t i s t
received, u p o n t h e whole, n e a r l y o n e t h o u s a n d p o u n d s . "

a s t o c k j o b b e r a n d lottery-office k e e n e r , w h i c h f o r a time,
puzzled t a x - g a t h e r e s . M r . C h a r t s P r i c e lived i n g r e a t
style, g a v e splendid dinners, a n d d i d e v e r y t h i n g o n t h e
g r a n d e s t scale. Y e t M r . C h a r t s P r i c e h a d n o p l a t e . T h e
a u t h o r i t i e s c o u l d not find so ranch a s a silver s p o o n o n
h i s m a g n i f i c e n t premises. H e w a s t o o c u n n i n g t o p o s s e s s

Charts P r i c e was sent t o ; b u t Mr. Charts P r i c e was not
b e found at t h a t particular juncture. A l t h o u g h this

d e s t r o y e d e v e r y ves-tigeof t h e f o r g i n g implements. N o t
t h e p o i n t of a g r a v e r , n o t a s p o t of ink. not a s h r e d of
silver p a j i c r . n o t a s c r a p of a n y b o d y ' s h a n d w r i t i n g , could
be found. D e s p i t e , h o w e v e r , t h i s p a u c i t y of e v i d e n c e t o
c o n v i c t him, M r . C h a r l e s P r i c e h a d n o t t h e c o u r a g e t o
face a j u r y , mid e v e n t u a l l y s a v e d t h e j u d i c a t u r e m u c h
t r o u b l e and e x p e n s e , by h a n g i n g himself in B r i d e w e l L
T h e success of Old P a t c h h a s n e v e r been s u r p a s s e d ;
a n d even in t h e d a r k e s t e r a in t h e h i s t o r y of B a n k f o r g e ries—which
d a t e s f r o m t h e suspension of c a s h p a y m e n t s ,
in F e b r u a r y 1 7 9 7 — " O l d P a t c h " w a s still remembered
as t h e Ciesar of F o r g e r s .

royal s t a n d a r d is seen floating f r o m t h e c e n t r e of t h e b u i l d d i r e c t l y b e f o r e t h e P a l a c e is a b r o a d g r a v e l l e d r o a d
f o r d r i v i n g , t h e n a h i g h b e a u t i f u l i r o n fence s u r r o u n d s t h e
building. Ik-fore t h i s r a i l i n g s o l d i e r s a r e c o n s t a n t l y p a trolling, d a y a n d night, t o sec t h a t n o one i n t r u d e s u p o n
t h e premises.
F o r a moment, whilst gazing a t the palace, 1 thoughtlessly leaned a g a i n s t one of Ihe iron posts. I n s t a n t l y a soldier c a m e t o m e a n d said, s t a n d b a c k , if y o u p l e a s e ; n o
one is allowed t o t o u c h t h e fence. F o r a m o m e n t m y R e publicanism w a s up, b u t 1 soon cooled off w i t h t h e r e flection t h a t e v e r y c o u n t r y m u s t be p r e m i t t e d t o m a k e

M a n y ladies left t h e i r c a r r i a g e s f o r t h e t i m e a n d p r o m e n a ded t h r o u g h t h i s b r o a d ' a v e n u e on e v e r y h a n d . T h i s i s
a brilliant scene, a n d 1 many t i m e s wished y o u all by m y
side t o e n j o v it w i t h me. I t is decidedly t h e p l a c e t o see

S o m e say s h e w a s u p o n t h e d o c k fishing a t t h e
time, b u t t h i s w e believe t o b e a mistake. S h e was attended by Dr. Allen.
M c K e n z i e w a s t a k e n t o t h e H o s p i t a l of t h e S i s t e r s of
C h a r i t y . H i s f r o n t t e e t h w e r e k n o c k e d out, a n d his f a c e
and b r e a s t b a d l y scalded.
T h e first m a t e was found u n d e r a p i l e of w o o d n e a r b y .
