TRAVERSE

THE

CITY", M I C H . F R I D A Y , F E B R U A R Y 10,1865.
kept me from promotion. O I how often have I; in tbe
depths of mj heart, wished I had died on the field of
Waterjoo, or breathed W t my life in tbe arms of my
preserver. Six weeks ago I was wrecked in the packet
ship Clyde, on Nfiw Brunswick. I have wandered on
foot through Canada and New Hampshire, singing for a
few penaieg, or begging my bread till I met your sympathy to-day. How do those college halls and this noble band of students recall to my reeolleetion the scenes
of former years."
Tbe emotions of the stranger, for a moment overcnjne
his voice ; when he resumed, tbe tears still coaming
down hia cheeks—
" I know not why God should direct my steps hither,
but, gentlemen, this shall be tbe beginning of n new life
to me, and here, in His presence and that of these witnesses. I swear, as I h^pe to meet you in Heaven, not to
taste a drop of alcbohol In any form again." •
Prolonged and deafening cheers followed those words ;
and I noticed many a moist eye. A collection was immediately taken, and more than fiftv dollars were put
ioto his bands. As he ascended the coach to take his
departure, ho turned to tbe excited multitude who surrounded him and said
" It is but justice that you should know my name,
am Lieutenant kinncs. a nephew of tbe great Marshal
Lanoes. Muy God bless you all—farewell I"
As these vouths thoughtfully returned to their accustomed pursuits, not a few resolved that temperance and
virtue should ever mark their character, and that the
soldier's vow should be theirs..
