A l l experience, however, shows t h a t it is b u t t h o malice or the
m a d n e s s of g r e a t p a r t i e s t h a t f r e e S t a t e s h a v e b e e n
b r o u g h t dowu t o destruction. Y o u often h e a r alarms,
t h a t a p a r t y iu p o w e r is s u b v e r t i n g t h e S t a t e , a n d i t s o m e t i m e s h a p p e n s so. B u t nine t i m e s o u t of ten, i t i s a partyo u t of p o w e r , t h a t in i t s i m p a t i e n c e o r i t s a m b i t i o n overthrows a Republic.
T h e D e m o c r a t i c p a r t y , of c o u r s e l e a v i n g off t h e loyal
D e m o c r a t s , o p p o s e d t h e e l e c t i o n of A b r a h a m L i n c o l n ,
in I 8 6 0 . I n d o i n g s o t b e y d i v i d e d a n d o r g a n i z e d in t h r e e
columns. O n e a t r e a s o n a b l e column, of S t a t e R i g h t s ,
disunion Democrats, under BreckinbridgeA second,
a loyal N o r t h e r n c o l u m n , u n d e r D o u g l a s . T h e t h i r d , a
c o n c i l i a t o r y flying c o l u m n , u n d e r J o h n Bell, w h o h a t
s i n c e j o i n e d t h e insurgents. W e t h e r e u p o n i n v i t e d t h e
t w o loyal c o l u m n s t o c o m b i n e w i t h t h e R e p u b l i c a n
part*- t o o p p o s e t h e disunion D e m o c r a t i c c o l u m n . T h e y
d e c l i n e d . O n t h e e v e of t h e election in I 8 6 0 , I told t h e
followers of D o u g l a s a n d of B e l l t h a t w h e n t h e election
s h o u l d h a v e c l o s e d , t h e y w o u l d find t b e y h o ^ i n a d v e r t e n t l y f a v o r e d disunion a n d
rebellion.
T b e y persisted,
a n d t h e a t t e m p t e d revolution c o m e . D i s u n i o n t h e n p r e s e n t e d itsolf; iu t h o p r a c t i c a l f o r m of p r e v e n t i n g A b r a ham L i n c o l n f r o m a s s u m i n g t h e E x e c u t i v e a u t h o r i t y .
T h u s the Democratic party produced that calamity, the
S o u t h e r n D e m o c r a t s a c t i n g f r o m design, t h e N o r t h e r n
D e m o c r a t s passive through inadvertance. T h e disputed
s u c c e s s i o n still remains u n a d j u s t e d . A now e l e c t i o n b o s
c o m e o n . F o r a time, t h e N o r t h e r n D e m o c r a t s , w i t h
n o t a b l e e x c e p t i o n s , g a v e a m o r e o r less l i b e r a l s u p p o r t
t o t h e G o v e r n m e n t a g a i n s t t b e D e m o c r a t s i u s u r g e n t s of
the S o u t h . But the same Democratic forces which
figured in t h e election of 1860, n o w a p p e a r in t h e p o l i t i cal field w i t h p o s i t i o n s a n d p o l i c y u n c h a r g e d s i n c e t h a t
time, a s I think, e x c e p t for t h e worse.
The Southern
D e m o c r a c y i s still in a r m s u u d e r t b e u s u r p e r a t R i c h m o n d . T h e D o u g l a s a n d Bell c o l u m n s c o n s o l i d a t e d , o r e
found a t C h i c a g o , a n d all t h r e e of t h e p a r t i e s a r e c o m p a s s i n g t h e rejection of t h e c o n s t i t u t i o n a l P r e s i d e n t of
t h e U n i t e d S t a t e s . T h e y a g r e e n o t ouly in t h i s a t t e m p t
b u t t b e y assign t b e s a m e reason f o r it, namely, t h a t A b r a ham Lincoln is a t y r a n t
T h e y a g r e e , also, t h a t the real u s u r p e r a t R i c h m o n d
is b l a m e iota a n d p u r e , a t l e a s t t h e R i c h m o n d D e m o c r a c y
