T h e Old D r a w - B a c k on Northern Michigan.
A correspondent of the New-York Evening Pott,
writing from East Saginaw, gives the true reason why the
tettknent of;the northern part of the Lower Peninsula
of Michigan WM so long retarded, whilo its no more genial
Southern tiers of counties wore rapidly filling np by a
hardy population. Tfie corres|>oudent says: In 1822 the
Government stationed some troops on the spot where
Saginaw City is now built, afd in 1824 the American
Far Company established a trading post on the preSent
site of East Saginaw. These, with a few French and
Indians, constituted the population of Saginaw np to
about 1836.

I t was the policy of the Far Company, the Indians,
the trappers and hunters, to keep out settlers, who would,
by clearing up tho country, invite in others, and spoil the
hunting and trapping; and to gain this end, they always
represented the country as cold, unhealthy, and nearly
all swamp or wet prairie. Those who voyaged thither
by water, found the land borfieritig npon the 8aginaw
" river generally low, with but little dry and no very high
land, with wet prairies oxteading off into the river for
miles, with here and there an island of timber. This was
the general character of the land bordering the river,
and the impression usually aiade upon those navigating
the river was unfavorable. Thoy Also confirmed the
stories of the hunters and trappers, and took it for granted thfct the whole country was similar to that bordering
the Saginaw river.
The Surveyors employed by Government to survey this
region, taldbg advantage of the want, of knowledge on
the part o f t h e Departments, as well as of disinterested
individuals in the fact, and presuming that the misrepresentations made by others, and the prejudice existing
against this section, together with its isolated position,
Would for a long time prevent an investigation, committed enormous frauds iD th^jurvey. Whole towns were
returned as surveyed, in which the surveyors never set
foot, and the plats and surveys made in their rooms at
Saginaw City. To carry oat the popular idea, the whole
country, wit& few exception^, was divided into wind-falls,
bfick ash swamps, marshes, lakes and crooked streams.
iWpretgnded survey set the seal of truth upon former
reports, and had the effect intended—that of keeping out
settlers, or land hunters; for no man possessed of common
sense would think of moving to such a country as report
and the survey showed this (to be.
After a long time, however, Government discovered
tbefraud, and a new survey of soma and a re-survey of
other portions of this section was ordered. This re-survey has only just been couple ted. I t puts a very different face upon the matter, and shows tho country to be
well timbered and the soil rich
T h e Contested Election Case.
The examination into the frauds committed in the First
Congressional District of jthis State, has resulted in the
e*ablishment of the following facts, either of which will
more than overbalance the majority against Mr. Howard,
the Republican candidate, Svhiofa was 75:
First—That tho election at Grosse Point was removed
from the place where it wis legally required to be held,
without any plansible reason—much less without any
legal right—thus vitiating the vote at that poll, where
Oflioper received 162 majority.
Second—That the election in the Fourth Word of
Detroit was illegal and void, on account of certain gross
violations of the law, such as not sealing the ballot box
until two days after the polls closed, ajjd the votes being
counted and the returns signed, not by a sworn officer.
Third—That the election in the Second Ward was illegal and void for certain Equally grave and vftol irregularities and violations of law, and certain outrageous
frauds.
Fourth—That there were one hundred and twenty
fraudulent and illegal votes polled in the several wards
and townships of the couilty, aside from those specified
above.
Lumbering Prospects.

The Grand" Rapids Eagle advises lumbermen, everywhere, to push their business to the utmost of their
ability during the coming season. The price of lumber
in all the great marts has without doubt passed its lowest
ebb. The past season has been an unfavorable one f^r
getting in logs, and scarcely a angle lumbering district
in tho whole- country, east or west, has come near doing
its usual amount of buaoees. As a consequence, the
markets will be leaB liberally supplied, the stocks on hand
will rapidly disappear, and lumber will go u p Wo say,
with confidence, that the- future of the lumber business
was never more inviting than now. The financial depression through which we have passed has not entirely
stopped the improvement of tho West, and the demand
for lumber during the next firo years, will, we predict,
exceed that of any five years to its history.
TOT OWOSSO AKD LAX^KO RAILROAD.—A large force
his been placed upon the line of the Amboy, Lansing ood
Traverse Bay Railroad, between Owosso and Lowing
under the direction of W. : P. Innes, Esq, of Grand R^ids,
who has tho contract to build the road between these two
point* and who has given bonds to have that distance to
naming order by the fint day of December next Mr.
Innes is an energetic and practical gentleman who never
fails in any thing be undertakes.
