Presently, however, for some service, b o t h hands were

Yes. it was a beautiful home
a n d s h e h a d l o v e d it, t h e l o w - v o i c e d , g e n t l e w o m a n w h o

Suddenly t h e child s t a r ' s n p f r o m h e r low s e a t a n d
with p i r t e d lips a n d dilated eyes, s t a n d s listening. T h e
sound if m u s i c c o m e s u p f r o m below, a n d a m i d all t h e
artistic a d d i t i o n s a n d v a r i a t i o n s h e r c a r d e t e c t s t h e n o t e s
o f an old f a m i l i a r r e f r a i n . I t is t h e s a m e s w e e t e v e n i n g
song, h e r m o t h e r ' s lullaby. S h e used t o s i n g i t in t h e
ph-ple t w i l i g h t , with G e r t y ' s golden h e a d n e s t l i n g in h e r
bosom, a n d now w i t h t h i s g e n t l e m e a s u r e , t h o s e far-off

hears h e r low sweet v o i c c k e e p i n g t i m e w i t h t h e m u s i c ;

she glided d o w n t h e b r o a d s t a i r c a s e , f l i t t e d p a s t t h e open

long h a i r s t r e a m i n g b e h i n d h e r , and hi;r feet s c a r c e l y
t o u c h i n g t h e f r o z e n g r o u n d , on past t h e g r e a t houses, a n d
over t h e lonely ways, n e v e r h a l t i n g o r t u r n i n g until u n d e r
t h e d a r k old pines, s h e reached n s n o w - c o v e r e d g r a v e .
H e r e it was. T h i s was p o o r m inima's h o m e n o w ; h e r e
t h e y h a d b r o u g h t h e r on t h a t sad snow-falling day, and
left h e r — l e f t h e r all alone, w i t h h e r closed e y e s and folde d h a n d s ; nnd h e r e she, h e r little g i r l , would c o m e aud

N o f e e i n g of fear e n t e r e d t h e c h i l d ' s h e a r t n o w . S h e

P o o r G e r t y ! H e a v e n and h e r m o t h e r "were no l o n g e r
a d r e a m , w h e n t h e y carrier! t h e little lifeless figure h o m e
n e x t m o r n i n g , a n d silently laid i t in h e r own r o o m , still

B a b i e s we believe, have never bccji c o n s i d e r e d a s b e ing i n ' a n y way c o n n e c t e d w i t h t h e fine arts, a n d p e r h a p s
" j u d i c i o u s c r i t i c i s m " m i g h t h a v e little b e n e f i t in i m p r o v ing, in t h e e s t i m a t i o n of t h e possessors, t h o c h e r u b s
c h i s e l e d by t h e h a n d of nature. T h a t t h e y b e l o n g t o t h e
" D o m e s t i c D e p a r t m e n t " t h e r e can. we t h i n k , b e no
d o u b t T h e style of b a b i e s is illimitable, a n d e a c h family
t h a t i s t h e d e l i g h t e d p o s « f « o r of one, d e e m s , of c o u r s e ,
i t s own t h e m o s t in a c c o r d a n c e w i t h classic taste. T h e r e f o r e it is i m p o s s i b l e t o fix any s t a n d a r d , b e y o n d m e r e opinion, b y w h i c h t o e s t a b l i s h t h e f a c t of b e a u t y in a b a b y ;
a n d we a r e o b l i g e d t o l e a v e i t w i t h t h e possessor t o fix
t h e degree, a n d sav w h e t h e r pug-nosed or aquiline-nosed,
big-eyed o r little-eyed, d u m p y b a b i e s o r m o r e e x t e n d e d ,

this brings out the fact that the Great Artist w h o made
t h e w o r k g i v e s also t h e f a c u l t y of a p p r e c i a t i n g t h e e x c e l lence of e a c h p a r t i c u l a r p r o d u c t i o n t o t h e o n e s m o s t i n t e r ested. T h e r e i s g r e a t w i s d o m in t h i s ; f o r if t h e same
general idea of beautv prevailed, nobody's b a b y would b e
safe. T h e r e would b e endless e n v y i n g , a n d strife, a n d
