Dublin Core

Title

Grand Traverse County Coroner's Records, 1951-1962

Subject

Death -- Causes.

Description

Collection of Grand Traverse County Coroner's Records, 1897-1965. Attached to this record are the reports and index to the volume, created by volunteers of the Grand Traverse Area Historical Society. The records were created by the Coroner's Office as part of the process of investigating a particular cause of death; therefore, they can often provide information beyond what is recorded on the death certificate. The coroner's necrology and pathology reports may include details on the health of the individual and the exact manner of death. Inquest testimony may point to family relationships, as friends and family often provided sworn statements. Police statements and jury testimony and verdicts may also be available, leading to research in court records or penitentiary or prison records. This volume of records follows a different format when compared to the previous tomes. It covers some of the same dates as Volume VI, but is clearly marked as Volume 6 on its cover. The first entry is on March 9, 1951 and is signed by Coroner Leonard A. Bohacz who was associated with the Leonard Funeral Home. It is apparent that he is serving at the same time as Dr. Thirlby in the previous volume. Subsequent coroners filing reports in this volume were:
Donald G. Pike, MD: December 1951 – December 1954
Bernard J. Sweeney, MD: January 1955 – December 1956
Warren W. Cline, MD and Theodore N. Cline, MD: January 1957 – December 1958
William Steele, MD: February 1959 – January 1960
Thomas R. Cajigas, MD: January 1960 – November 1962
