Protest.
f
We, the undersigned, members of the Houre of Representatives of tbe State of Michigan, feeling and knowing that greet iujustice has been done to tbo north-western portion of tbe Lower-Peninsula, by the passage of
the " bill to confer an additional grant of land upon the
Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad Companyf and
deeming tbe subject of sufficient importance to their
-constituents and to tbe State at large, as to demand the
presentation of our views, in this form, to this Legislature, acd to tbe peoplo of this State, do hereby enter
oar protest against the passage of that measure, and give
the reasons which have controlled oor votes and now
impel us in tbe dischasge of this duty.
The question of granting lands by tbo General Gov-crnment, in largo bodies, either lo States or corporations, is a question of public policy wbich has received
the attention and uudergone the' examination of the
est and soundest statesmen of this Union ; and until
within a few yeara, its adoption_aa a policy, was considered by Congress as altogether unjustifiablo and wrong.—
But tbe grant for tbe construction of the Illinois Central
Road, secured ssit was by the indefatigablo energy and
persuasive power of the lamented Douglass and securing
as it did the almost instant construction of one of the
longest and most serviceable lines of railway in the
whole country, and opening up as it did, a wild and unsettled but prodactive region to tbo occupation of the
agriculturist and other producers, overturned all theories
of past political economists, and opened the door for
like bequests to every State in tbe Union having within
its limits any considerable amount of public domain.
Michigan asked and obtaiued her share of this governmental patrimony, and long liaea of projected railway,
with wide belts of land* reserved for their coustruclipu,
wore forthwith drawn at right angles across the unsettled
portions of the north, and stretched away to the remote
shores of Lako Superior. With the wisdom of the asking, or tbe propriety in the giving, we have uothing
to do, any further tban it demonstrates tbe power which
one portion of a State may exercise over another, in
shaping its destiny, retarding its progress, and interfering with those essential laws of population and prosperity which draw men together ioto communities, build

for many a year. It has been swoleb to a greater extent
than at any period within the past ten years, and at present flows with a swift' and murky cdrrent toward the
lake, carrying, on its bosom the accumulated filth of the
last decade. It is gratifying to think that tbe storm of
rain was not accompanied, by a south wind, or every person in the city would have felt its effect* by being compelled to drink muddy, filthy water for the next two
weeks. The freshet has solved-the problem which had
occupied the attention of the Board or Public Works,
the Commission of Engineers, and the " commjtteo of

The only real damage on the river was the carrying
away of tbe Eric street bridge at an early hour on Tuesday morning. Fortunately the accident was not attended with any injury to lile or limb, and it is anticipated
that the structure will be replaced in position in a few
days. Tbe owners of vessels took timely precaution to
secure them properly, and none of the craft in tbe river
have suffered from tbe rapidly rolling tide.
Portions of the track on tbe Chicago and Great Eastern Railroad have been washed away in several places.—
The most extensive break is near the crossing of the
Indiana and Salem Railroad, and passengers by trains
bound west on Wednesday had to walk froni the junction of these two roads, a distance of eight miles, to the
nearest station on the Pittsburg and Ft. Wayne Railroad, where they took the cars for Chicago, arriving
there yesterday moruing. Another portion of the track
has been swept away for a considerable djstance, about
40 miles from the city. It is also reported that one of
the bridges acroai the Calumet River lias been rendered

The rapid fall in gold is a strong admonition to every
man to avoid running in debt and especially to those
who buy to sell agaio, to bny sparingly. The reign of
high prices is fast drawing to Ii close. Tbe beat use
that can now be mode of currency by any man, is to pay
bis debts with it. and the next best is to invest it in
seven-thirty bonds. Of eoursc there will be exceptional
cases of men who will continue to make money by hazerdoos speculations in the teeth of the impending crash.
Men make money at the faro table, and will continue to
make mooey there. Men mike monej|by baying lottery
tickets, aud will continue to make money in that way.—»
But how piany thus make money, ia comparison with
those who lose it T So of tbo innumerable speculations of
tbe hoar. The great mnjority of those who are borrowing mooer to engage in them, and tbeir number is
countless, will find that they are heaping up* burdens of
debt which can only be taken from their shoulders by a
bankrupt uct—buying moouthine at the cost of promises
to pay which would be dear for gold. Let every man
think twice, and carefully at that, before be rnns iu
(k-bt in enterprises wbich would prove failures if gold
should fall within tbe next few weeks to 125.
That no small portion of tbe people of this country are
beginning to withdrew tbeir capital from tbe ordinary
channels of speculation, is eviaent rrom tbe rapid, abd
rapidly increasing, sale of tbe seven-thirty bonds, which
for several days past has averaged nearly $6,000,000.
