New York, July 4.—(Special).—A cable dispatch from off
Sutiago. via Port Antonio, Jaihaica, this afternoon supplies
tfe detail of Cervera's dash and the distruction of his fleet.
The Spanish admiral himself, it appears. $ent his fleet to
tto annihilation. It was 9:30 o'clock when his flag ship was
seen steaming rapidly, out through the narrow channel at the
Arbor’s mouth. A ugnal ran from ship to ship of the
Anerican fleet and the Iowa, Indiana, Ore^n, Massachusefta. Texas, Brooklym and Corsair were soon hurrying into
fi^tioQ to block the exit
^ So little were the Americans expecting a fli^t that the
f^ ship New York was cruising along the coast to the east
and only got back in time to see the finish of the fight and
t4 fire a shot or twn at the shattwed destroyers that were
headed for the beach.
The American warships did not open fire as soon as the
Spanish vtsseU were discovered, but allowed them to get
obt of the harbor and well away from the range of the gitns
of Mono Castle before they be^n to close in.

* 'Cervera headed to the west, close to the shore and firing
fapm every gun he-could bring to bear. At the heels of the
diristobal Colon came the'Vizcayk and Oquendo and back
ol them two destroyers.

Then the destroyers turned upon the Corsair in a wild

Just previous to this a while flag had been, shown on

shore the Colon was still firing an occasional des|>eratc gun.
As the flames swept over the Uached ^ruiser the crews couh
be seen huddling away from the flames, yet afraid to lea]
into the water. Finally explosion after explosion came fron
the beached vessels.

is the only place in the city
where good shoes are sold^
not because they know our
