The attitude of England in the Panama Canal-matter has more
humorous than serious points involved, inastanch as that nation k
has not happened and may nev^
happen. So far all the regulations that have been prescribed for
the canal exist merely on paper and may be changed before the
big dneh k opened to the eommerce of the world. Am it k, the
protest of the Englishmen has no bask either in Uw or custom.
They have no ground for oompUint as long aa they have not been
injured, and nntii the canal k formally opened nnd tolk have been
actually exacted from the coastwke veasds of the empire, there
is no cause for compUint <m the part of -the nation across the water.
The complaint filed at Washington comes at an inopportune time
and will do more to militate a^nst the English than any other
act that eonld have been done. There k {flenty of time for object
ing to any of the provkions of the canal rules that may be put into
effect, and the proper thing to do k to wait and see if anybody
k really injured b^ore setting Wp a howl like the one voiced in
the Grey document. It k noticed that the Cnilcd Stotes is appearing in no bony to answer the pl-otest, and probably no rush will
be made to entry favor with the obstreperous Britkhera, who take
it upon themselves to dicUte to thk country*- 1° the past it has

Coal Trust Is Supreme
Some time ago the members of the city council of Battle Greek
concluded that the local coal dcalere were charging the people
exhorbhant prices for anthracite coal, and in order to help ont
their constituents they passed a resolution authorizing the city
officials to purchase 2,500 (ons of bard coal and sell it to the citi
zens at cost. So far the plan woriced well, -birt the real test of
the value of their action came when the city clerk attempted U*
buy the coal. He wrote to several of the big eompsnies, and in
some insUnees they politely notified him that they were short and
had no coal to acH. while others were honest about it and said
plainly that they could not sell the city any ooal as they bad
to confine their salesjto the dealers. Thus the dream of the Battle
Creek solons faded /nto thin air lH«cau»e they were up against one
of the biggest trrats in the land. It k a good thing.that the
attempt was made by thk enterprising city to better the. condi
tion of ite citizais who are abort of fuel, because it afforded the
people of the aUte first hand proof that the coal supply of the
country k controlled by one of the most powerful trusts in exislance.
It also proved that all their products must've handled through the
local dealers who are in the grip of the octopus in such a manner
that they have to do as the coal barons say or eke have their supply
of coal cut off right ih the hciidit of theraeason. The local dealer
k not to blame for the prohibilive prices that coal k held at thk
winter. Jle k as much the victim of the trust as-the consumer,
which fact k ahown by the delayed shipmento on his ordere at the
prraent time. The dealers have b^n unable t4> secure anywhere
near the amount of hard coal that they need anywhere in the
country, and if they are hrtd up in this manner, it cannot be
expected that a city eonld secure any better treatment at the
of the coal trust. The hard coal situation is a hold-up game
and has to ito grasp ^fae derier as well as the consumer. When

The Housekeepers’ League of Phnadelphis has sneceed.'d in

In order to do ihk they secured a quantity of eggs and sold them
